Tomo Ramen

October 20, 2024 by Jessica Berger and Tekela Fisher Leave a Comment

Hidden on SE Hawthorne St, Tomo Ramen is a cozy jewel in Portland’s culinary crown. They offer a unique take on the classic Japanese noodle house. Its interior, a captivating mix of dark tones and vibrant reds, is adorned with intriguing Japanese pop culture art, creating an inviting, eclectic atmosphere. This snug space is perfect for those seeking a relaxed meal away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

What we ordered

At Tomo Ramen, ordering is a breeze with their modern kiosk system, adding a convenient, contemporary touch to the dining experience. The staff, known for their efficiency and friendliness, ensures that your food arrives promptly and piping hot at your table.

Our culinary adventure began with the Shrimp Tempura, a dish that delighted us with its perfect seasoning and crisp texture. The tempura was a harmonious blend of crunch and flavor, setting a high bar for the rest of the meal.

The star of the show was Tomo’s Ramen. This hearty bowl came brimming with rich pork broth, succulent chashu pork belly, and perfectly fried pork pieces. The vegetables, including steamed bean sprouts, cabbage, spinach, and marinated bamboo shoots, added freshness and crunch. The dish was completed with garnishes of scallion, fried onion, garlic flake, and nori, creating a symphony of flavors and textures in every bite.

For a vegetarian twist, the Veggie Miso Ramen was an absolute winner. It featured a robust miso broth filled with an array of top-quality ingredients: homemade tofu nuggets, steamed bean sprouts, cabbage, marinated bamboo shoots, pickled ginger, avocado slices, and sliced tofu. Topped with scallion and nori, this dish was a testament to the kitchen’s ability to cater to diverse dietary preferences without compromising on taste.

Ambiance

Tomo Ramen’s ambiance adds significantly to the dining experience. The dimly lit interior, with its black walls and red accents, creates a cozy yet vibrant setting. The red lampshades cast a warm glow, enhancing the intimate feel of the restaurant. The walls, adorned with prints of old Japanese films, transport diners into a world that beautifully bridges traditional Japanese culture with modern aesthetics.

Final Thoughts on Tomo Ramen

Tomo Ramen is more than just a place to eat; it’s a destination for those seeking an authentic, flavorful, and enjoyable ramen experience in Portland. From the warm welcome to the last spoonful of delicious broth, every visit to Tomo Ramen is a journey of culinary delight. Its combination of great food, unique ambiance, and friendly service makes it a must-visit spot for both locals and visitors alike. Next time you’re in the area and craving a bowl of soul-satisfying ramen, remember that Tomo Ramen is waiting to welcome you with open arms.

Phaya Thai Express

July 12, 2024 by Jessica Berger and Tekela Fisher Leave a Comment

Hey Portland friends! We just discovered a great new spot on Hawthorne Blvd that we’re excited to share with you—Phaya Thai Express. This fast-casual Thai spot has quickly become one of our go-to places for delicious, authentic Thai food, and we think you’ll love it too. Whether you need a quick lunch, or a low key dinner. Phaya is sure to meet your needs and be delicious while it is happening.

Walking into Phaya Thai Express, you’re immediately greeted by the inviting aromas of freshly prepared dishes. The setup is simple and fun—you get to build your meal from a base of either white rice or brown rice and grains, and then choose from an array of mouthwatering dishes displayed cafeteria-style.

On our visit, we decided to try a bowl with two selections. First up was the NY Steak Curry, featuring juicy NY steak, galangal, and a southern Thai curry that packed just the right amount of spice. It was hands down our favorite of the night.

We also tried the Prik King Catfish, which included fried catfish in a house curry with rhizome root and basil. The combination of flavors was fantastic, with the basil adding a fresh twist to the lightly spicy curry. And of course, we couldn’t resist ordering some crab rangoon. These crispy treats, stuffed with real crab and served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce, were the perfect starter.

We also tried a couple cocktails so that we could test out the full experience. I had a gin cocktail, which came with jasmine, giffard pampelmouse, and lemon. It was tart and well rounded. We also tried the hibiscus mezcalita which was very smoky and tart. It was made with mezcal, hibiscus syrup, aperol, lime and a chamoy rim.

Something for Everyone

One of the things we love about Phaya Thai Express is how inclusive their menu is. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or need gluten-free options, there’s something here for you. The variety ensures everyone can find their new favorite dish. If you arent into cocktails they had multiple non-alcoholic mocktails and sodas. There is also a large outdoor patio for you to enjoy during these lovely sunny months.

Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch, having a casual dinner, or planning a get-together with friends, Phaya Thai Express is a great choice. The food is flavorful, the atmosphere is welcoming, and it’s conveniently located on Hawthorne Blvd.

So next time you’re in the neighborhood, swing by Phaya Thai Express and treat yourself to some incredible Thai cuisine. We promise you won’t be disappointed!

Canard – Oregon City

June 1, 2024 by Jessica Berger and Tekela Fisher Leave a Comment

Hot Spot of the week is the new outpost of Canard in Oregon City! We recently headed over there for a leisurely business lunch, and it is the perfect spot for exactly that. This new restaurant offers some of the Canard classics, plus some new and interesting dishes.

Canard Oregon City

We started, as usual with some lovely cocktails. I had the Standard OG, a nice dark cocktail in the vein of a Vieux Carre. Jessica gave the Old Habits a spin, which was bright citrusy and a tad spicy from the jalapeno. Both were well-mixed and tasty!

For lunch we started with the shrimp cocktail lettuce wraps. This dish is a refreshing twist on the classic shrimp cocktail, with the shrimp nestled in a leaf of butter lettuce and topped with a Thai cocktail sauce. It’s the perfect light lunch option that won’t leave you feeling weighed down.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, try the foie gras dumplings. These little bites of heaven are bursting with rich and savory flavor. The dumplings are filled with foie gras and are bathed in dashi and hoisin that perfectly complements the richness of the filling.

For a wonderful vegetarian option, don’t miss out on the seven spice squash. This dish features tender slices of Delicata squash that are seasoned with a blend of seven spices, and served alongside cashew cream, lemongrass, and grapefruit. It’s a perfect side dish to pair with any of Canard’s other offerings.

Not only does Canard offer amazing food, but the restaurant itself is a sight to behold. The chic and modern decor creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere that will make you feel right at home. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite on your lunch break or enjoying a leisurely meal with friends, Canard is the perfect spot.

In terms of location, Canard is conveniently located in the heart of Oregon City. So, whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s the perfect spot to stop and refuel during your day.

Astral and Duality

April 1, 2024 by Jessica Berger and Tekela Fisher Leave a Comment

Welcome to the ultimate hotspot of the week, where teamwork takes center stage! Picture this: Duality Brewing crafting sensational beer and playing host to natural wines, alongside Astral’s mastery of fresh, delectable small plates. We recently experienced this dynamic duo on a sun-soaked day, and let me tell you, the patio was an absolute paradise.

We started off with a glass of pinot gris, perfectly complementing the sunshine. The rice lager that we tried out next surprised us with its hoppy twist, and felt like a great balance of flavors.

Now, let’s talk about the food – on this visit we tried so many delicious dishes! The Dungeness crab tostada was outstanding, with a swath of avocado mousse, tons of fresh crab, and bursts of rainbow trout roe atop a blue corn tostada. It was sunshine on a plate, fitting for an Oregon spring day. Following suit, the dry-aged Kanpachi crudo was bright and fresh, served with an aguachile of carrot habanero, serrano oil, and shiso, with a rice crisp to scoop it up. For a heartier small plate, we added the nixtamalized sunchokes – rich, earthy, and accompanied by a green goddess dressing and bonito flakes that danced in the breeze. And oh, the grilled fish taco! A generous filet of striped bass, grilled to perfection on their tiny outdoor grill, was a testament to their dedication to freshness and quality.

Every bite and sip at Duality and Astral was a pure delight, heightened by the unbeatable patio setting on a beautiful Portland day. We’re already counting down the days until our next visit, eager to explore more of their menu or simply unwind with a refreshing drink.

Han Oak

January 9, 2024 by Jessica Berger and Tekela Fisher Leave a Comment

As a fervent lover of Korean cuisine, I’m always on the lookout for places that capture its essence and authenticity. In my culinary adventures across Portland, Han Oak has emerged not just as a restaurant, but as a celebration of Korean flavors, marrying tradition with modernity. This gem in Portland is a testament to the versatility and richness of Korean cuisine, and my recent visit there was nothing short of spectacular.

The Ambiance: A Blend of Tradition and Modern Comfort

Han Oak is not your typical dining venue. It brings Korean-inspired cuisine to life in a setting that’s both intimate and inviting. The ambiance of the restaurant is akin to dining in a stylish, welcoming home. The decor is a thoughtful mix of minimalist and cozy, creating an environment where every meal feels like a special occasion.

The dining experience at Han Oak is further elevated by its exceptionally relaxed yet attentive service. The staff was knowledgeable, not only about the menu items but also in their tips on crafting the perfect gimbap roll and suggesting flavor combinations. Their attentiveness shone through as they were quick to refill our sides and ensure that every aspect of our meal was taken care of, enhancing the overall enjoyment of our dining experience.

Cocktails and Starters: A Prelude to the Feast

Our evening began with an exploration of Han Oak’s cocktail menu, featuring the “On Screen Chemistry” and “You’ll Be Hearing From My Lawyer.” Each cocktail was a masterful blend of flavors, setting a high bar for the meal to come. The banchan selection was our first foray into the meal, with each small dish – from the beets in miso ginger vinaigrette to the silken tofu in chili vinegar – showcasing the depth and variety of Korean cuisine.

The Gimbap Party: A Culinary Adventure

The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the Gimbap Party Menu. Served in a sizzling stone bowl, the selection included beef bulgogi, pork shoulder, and a delightful assortment of pickled vegetables. However, the star of the show was the cured scallops, which added an exquisite touch to our DIY gimbap rolls. The interactive nature of this meal not only allowed for personalized flavors but also added a fun and engaging element to our dining experience.

Final Reflections on Han Oak

Han Oak is a place where my love for Korean cuisine is not only met but exceeded. From the harmonious ambiance and impeccable service to the innovative dishes and fun-filled karaoke, Han Oak stands as a beacon of culinary excellence in Portland. It’s a must-visit for anyone who shares a passion for Korean cuisine and looks for an experience that goes beyond just dining.

Tropicale

October 3, 2023 by Jessica Berger and Tekela Fisher Leave a Comment

Autumn might be rolling in, painting the trees with its beautiful colors, but at Tropicale, it’s always a sunny day. Located on Ne Glisan st, this vibrant restaurant manages to capture the essence of summer even as the days start to cool.

When you first step into Tropicale, it’s like entering a small pocket of paradise. The decor, the ambiance, and the colors all scream tropical. But the highlight, without a doubt, is the spacious outdoor patio. The setup is relaxed with plenty of space to sit back and enjoy. And even though it’s getting chilly outside, Tropicale has thought of everything. Strategically placed heaters make sure you remain warm and cozy, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors a bit longer. It’s a perfect blend of nature and comfort.

Now, let’s talk about the drinks, because that’s where our adventure truly began. We kicked things off with the spicy mango margarita. If you’ve ever wanted summer in a glass, this is it. The balance of spicy and sweet was like a dance on the palate. Every sip was a burst of flavors, making it both refreshing and exciting.

But the showstopper of the evening was the Sol Dorado. This drink is a treat for both the eyes and the taste buds. Made with Jamaican Potstill Rum, tepache, guava, lime, and bitters, it perfectly captures the spirit of the tropics. The guava and lime give it a fresh, fruity flavor, while the rum adds that signature warmth. It’s the kind of drink that makes you want to close your eyes and imagine you’re on a sandy beach, listening to the waves.

As for the food, it was nothing short of spectacular. We started with the ceviche, a classic dish that is all about freshness. Every bite was a mix of tangy, spicy, and sweet, showcasing the essence of the sea. The ingredients were fresh, making it a light and enjoyable dish, perfect to set the tone for the evening.

Then came the chips and guac. Now, this might sound like a simple dish, but at Tropicale, it’s an experience. The guacamole is creamy and flavorful, but it’s the additions that make it stand out. It’s paired with 3 Sisters Nixtamal chips, which have a perfect crunch to them. Drizzled with guajillo oil and pepitas, the guac has an added layer of flavor and texture. And let’s not forget the two types of salsa – ranchera and pina. Each brings its own unique taste, adding to the complexity of the dish.

Wrapping up our evening at Tropicale, we sat back and took in the atmosphere. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s an escape. The sounds, the tastes, and the feeling of warmth, both from the heaters and the ambiance, make it a perfect spot to unwind and dream of summer.

In conclusion, Tropicale is more than just a dining spot. It’s a journey, a short trip to a tropical paradise. Whether it’s the drinks, the food, or the atmosphere, everything about this place urges you to relax and enjoy. We can’t wait for our next visit, and if you haven’t been yet, add it to your list. It’s a slice of summer, no matter the season. If you want to see some other great covered patios, you can find our post HERE

The Houston Blacklight

July 31, 2023 by Jessica Berger and Tekela Fisher Leave a Comment

Clinton street just got some funky new flavor and it’s name is the The Houston Blacklight. We got to check out this rad new hangout during their opening week and let me tell you, we are obsessed! The entire place is a multisensory experience like no other, and we are very confident that it will be a Clinton street mainstay for many years to come.

One of my favorite things about the space is that the decor is not just decor, it is an immersive experience. From beaded curtains to run your hands along to a whole tasseled wall at the entrance to the color-shifting artwork in the bathrooms, there is always something incredible to look at or touch in The Houston Blacklight. As the name for the bar is taken from the company that produced the psychedelic blacklight posters of the 70’s, it is only appropriate that they would fully live up to that experience.

The cocktails at The Houston Blacklight are imaginative and delightful, with creative combinations that sound like they shouldn’t really work and then they really, really do. A great example of this is the Many Things Cannot Fly- a combo of blackberry gin, coconut rum, Jager and black sesame orgeat. I thought this would NOT be my thing and then I loved it! My personal favorite of the evening though was the Silence is Silly- an incredibly refreshing mix of gin, lime aperitif, Bitter Bianco, cucumber, and salted plum. I would drink these all day and all night if my liver would allow.

The Houston Blacklight shines in the food department as well. They take bar classics and comfort food staples and then put their signature Malaysian-ish twist (with a dabble of French) on them. The Grilled Roti stuffed with cheese is dipped into a spicy tomato curry for an outstanding twist on the classic. French onion ramen hits such a perfect note, it makes you wonder why it hasn’t been done before. My biggest regret of the night was that we shared the Bone Marrow Burger, rather than me just stuffing the entire juicy, rich, indulgent thing into my face alone.

Long story short, you are going to want to go this place. Eat all of the things. Drink all of the things. Play like you are a kid again or a slightly mind-altered adult. We certainly cannot wait to go back and do it all again.

Have you been to the Houston Blacklight yet? What did you think? Let us know in the comments or check them out Here.

Heavenly Creatures

June 29, 2023 by Jessica Berger and Tekela Fisher Leave a Comment

Portland is starting to see its fair share of breweries and wine bars that blow some restaurants out of the water. Heavenly Creatures is no exception. We had an incredible experience at this wine bar and bottle shop.

Opened by two of the masterminds behind St. Jack, a fine dining staple in Portland, we knew going in that this was going to be a fun and unique meal. Sommelier Joel Gunderson has a huge selection of wines by the bottle and for glass pours. If you have a favorite style of wine, they will have one here that you will love. Also, rumor has it, a collection of wonderful wine bottle is called ‘heavenly creatures’. This wine bar is living up to its name.

heavenly creatures wine selection

Chef Aaron Barnett is not one to be outdone. He updates the menu with seasonal ingredients to ensure there are numerous options to pair perfectly with any wine that you choose. We tried almost everything on the menu and while it was all delicious, there were some plates that stood above the rest. The albacore cru, which is a menu mainstay, was one of the best bites of food we have had all year. It is a must try for anyone visiting. Topped with a porcini crisp and lobster oil, it will blow you away. We also tried the white asparagus which was incredibly fresh and crisp, the chicken sandwich which is topped with a heap of salmon roe, and potato chips with camembert.

We absolutely cannot wait to go back and try everything new on this menu. It’s quickly become our favorite place to grab a glass and a bite any day of the week. You can find them at 2218 NE Broadway st. Open Monday-Saturday from 5-10pm. We hope to see you there! Want to check out their current menu? Head to their website.
