Arden

We are back this week with another local Portland restaurant that we loved! We ordered takeout from Arden in the Pearl District, who typically strive to provide a full dining experience to help you escape from the hustle and bustle of life. While we can’t currently partake in the atmosphere of this beautiful restaurant, we are luckily still able to enjoy the food!

Chef Erik Van Kley creates hyper-local and seasonal food to help you stay connected to the community. They also have a great wine list that favors local winemakers, and you can even order bottles to go with your meal. We were celebrating my birthday this week so we ordered a bottle of Brut Rose by Patrice Colin from the Loire Valley. It was crisp and dry with slight hints of raspberries which paired perfectly with our chicken dinner for 2.

Our meal came with roasted beets served over house Labneh, roasted carrots and rapini, roast chicken with miso brown butter, wild mushroom spaetzle with herb crème fraîche, smashed fried potatoes with lemon peppercorn aioli and some fresh baguette.

Everything tasted phenomenal but the sauces were the real stars of the show. Each one was perfectly seasoned and expertly paired to make all of the flavors of the dish truly sing. I cannot wait to go and support this business again and enjoy the dining room when it is finally safe to do so. In the mean time, you too can support Arden and order online. PaaDee

Hot Spot of the week for pick-up/delivery this week is delicious modern Thai spot Paadee! They are rocking out a great family-style dinner to go for $49. This is a fantastic option when you are sick of the sight of your kitchen, but want a tasty and well-rounded meal. Check out the menu and order here.

Their set menu consists of 4 starters/mains plus jasmine and sticky rice on the side. Dungeness Crab fried rice was one, which had wonderfully plump morsels of our fave NW crustacean. The Som Tum Thai papaya salad had the perfect level of spice for our crew, plenty of heat without eradicating our tastebuds! The Ba Me Pitsanulok was a nice brothy offering. Plus, they smartly packaged the noodles and pork belly separately to avoid any potential sogginess. Finally, there was my personal favorite, the Gai Grop Sam Yan. This was a crispy chicken dish with cashew, scallion, and dried chili. Somehow even as a takeout dish, the chicken was so crispy and crunchy and delectable!

As there weren’t any boozy takeout options, I made my own favorite home cocktail which was actually perfect with the meal. 1 1/2 oz gin, 1 oz Aperol, .5 oz blood orange, 2 dashes Angostura bitters all shaken and strained into a rocks glass and then filled to the top with Brut Champagne or Cava. A nice non-alcoholic pairing that is my Thai go-to is one of the Som drinking vinegars with soda water.

If you’re family are heartier eaters, I would recommend ordering a few add-ons from the wonderful PaaDee takeout menu!

Pizzeria Otto

We headed out to try some pizza this past week, and in a city that has SO much pizza, we really dug this place! Located in the hip Foster-Powell area this Neapolitan pizzeria does things a bit differently. The crust is soft and very thin. We typically think of thin crust pizzas as being slightly crisp, or perhaps chewy, but you can hardly even call the dough of this pizza a crust. They flash-cook the pizza in an incredibly hot wood-fired oven. This results in a crisp bubbly ring around the edges and a slightly gooey center.

We wanted to see what else they had to offer so we also tried a beet salad and one of their lunch paninos. The beet salad was fresh with a bright citrus dressing and a creamy goat cheese. It was everything that you have learned to love and expect from a good beet salad. The panino was surprisingly more like a pita made of pizza dough, but so delicious! They stuff the bread with salami, Italian dressings, Lil Mama’s peppers and tons of arugula.

The food wasn’t the only thing that we liked about this cool new location. The dining room is spacious, minimalist, and they have huge windows which let in tons of natural light. I could easily spend all day in this restaurant because it has a great vibe.

We enjoyed everything that we tried and definitely plan on going back to check it out again. We went for lunch and learned that they offer happy hour pricing from 11am to 5pm. So go and get a personal pizza and a glass of wine for cheap for your next lunch date!

In light of the Covid-19 outbreak, Pizzeria Otto is offering takeout pizzas and salads, just call ahead, order, and support your local businesses through these hard times!

Prix Fixe Menus

Portland is a city for foodies. That is certainly no exception when it comes to fine dining. While our fine dining is served up a bit differently than you might find in New York or L.A., the food quality is just as high. In fact, we would argue that because you can show up in jeans and a t-shirt, our fine dining is even better. We have personally tried each of these restaurants, so if your favorite isn’t on the list, let us know in case we haven’t been yet! In no particular order here are our top 5 favorite prix fixe menus in the city!

Castagna

Chef Justin Woodward knows good food. He thoughtfully changes his menu with the seasons to make sure the flavors on your plate arrive at their peak freshness. His plating is also a work of art, with bright colors and thoughtful placements, he truly understands how to make the plate sing. This progressive restaurant is sure to leave you wowed.

Langbaan

Chef Earl Ninsom has created something so unique and loved here in Portland that you absolutely must try it. He turns classic Thai dishes into a stunning fine dining experience. With local and fresh ingredients from the Pacific Northwest mixed with traditional Thai flavors, prepare to be amazed by how he can make these ingredients shine.

Roe

Chef John Conlin provided us with the best seafood restaurant in Portland. He uses the freshest seafood you can find from all around the world and creates masterpieces using Japanese and French techniques. Tucked upstairs in a quiet mezzanine, this restaurant truly offers an unexpected experience.

Nodoguru

Chef Ryan Roadhouse brings us his take on the Japanese Omakase. He approaches each menu with creativity and innovation giving each month a different theme. He has an innate ability to make even the simplest of flavors elegantly elevated.

Farm Spirit

Chefs Aaron Adams and Scott Winegard don’t need to rely on animal products to amaze you. Their entirely plant-based menu is sure to wow, from the stunning platings to the variety of flavors and textures they employ. Prepare to have your mind changed about what vegan can be.

Voysey

This week we checked out the elegant speakeasy cocktail bar Voysey! This basement bar can be found by following the red light down the stairway at the back of Loyal Legion. If you don’t have a curious mind, you may not have even known this plush cocktail lounge existed.

Voysey is run by veteran female bartenders and bar managers serving up their own personal cocktail recipes as well as fun twists on some of the classics. As a result, everything on the menu is very thoughtful. If you are not in the mood for cocktails the menu is simple – 5 beer choices and 5 wine choices with a little something for everyone.

There are lots of cozy seating areas and a strong vintage vibe. Pink and red lights add to the ‘old-world’ vibe of the space. The bartender who served us was incredibly friendly, checked in on us just often enough to keep our drinks full, and was super knowledgable about all things cocktail.

Shalom Y'all

Our Hot Spot of the week is the delicious Shalom Y’all! Shalom Y’all is the Israeli street food focused offering from the wildly successful John Gorham restaurant group. It is located in a cute brick building in inner SE Portland. They serve lunch, dinner, happy hour, and even brunch on the weekends, so you can stop in and check them out any time!

We were pretty impressed immediately upon walking in the door by the beautiful design of the space. The black accented bar was a beautiful contrast to the clean, white subway tile and the hanging plants scattered around the space added a lovely, natural feel.

We started with drinks, as always. There was a lovely Spanish Cava on the happy hour menu that I jumped at. It was crisp and dry with nice, small bubbles. My dining companion opted for the Turkish Delight Slushy, which contained limoncello, ceylon tea, and orange blossom water. It was like summer in a glass!

Like most of the Gorham restaurant collective, Shalom Y’all is designed for sharing. As small plates for the table is my favorite way to eat, we happily obliged and ordered several dishes. One of our favorites was the Labneh with fried artichokes. The house made yogurt cheese was properly tangy, and the fried artichokes were crispy and tender simultaneously, and smothered in a hearty pile of garlic.

We also loved the Hummus ‘Pitryot’, which was topped with sauteed maitake mushrooms (YUMMM) plus dill and paprika. The Chard and Feta Safayech was amazing as well. It was almost like a spinach pie inside of a grilled pita with a wonderful tzatziki on the side. Both the Labneh and the Hummus were served with warm, fluffy pita that our wonderful server was happy to provide more of after we quickly devoured the first few.

While many of the dishes at Shalom Y’all are vegetable focused, the presence of hearty additions like fried artichoke to the dishes will leave even the omnivores satisfied. We can’t wait to come back and try so many more delicious items at Shalom Ya’ll! Check out their menus and hours here.

Capitol

Our Hot Spot this week is hip cocktail and karaoke bar, Capitol on NE Broadway and 14th. We have been wanting to check this place out for a bit, as it is right down the street from our new Northeast office. We finally got the chance to this last week, and we weren’t disappointed!

First off, we LOVED the decor. We were immediately smitten with the high dome-like ceiling, the beautifully lit, symmetrical liquor display, and the funky and brightly colored accent wall. There are delicious cocktails and a solid selection for happy hour. With all that Capitol has going for it, you will probably find us there for a post-workday cocktail quite often.

We started out with the True Blue. This cocktail was a gorgeous shade of robin’s egg, and included a mixture of tequila, lemon juice, and coconut. We liked that it was not too sweet and that the coconut gave it a creamy feel on the palate. Next, we tried the Something To Believe In, with Brokers, Aperol, Cocchi Americano, and Pisco. I feel like the resurgence of amaros in the cocktail scene has been fantastic, as it has lead to fun and interesting cocktails like this one.

Next, we moved on to one of the best bargains of Capitol’s happy hour- the scoots. For a measly $5, you get to choose a shot of liquor paired with a beer back. We loved the variety of choices they had and decided on a Balvenie and IPA and a Glenfiddich 12 with a Hazy IPA. You say ‘$5 for a scotch and tasty beer’? I say ‘Yes please’! However, if Whisky isn’t your thing (I don’t get it) there are also options of tequila and more.

Finally, let’s talk about the karaoke. We haven’t tested out the karaoke side of things yet, but it’s only a matter of time. Apparently, they have free/open karaoke in the evenings at 7pm. In addition, they have private rooms to rent out if belting out a tune to strangers isn’t your cup of tea. Personally, I like doing my best Paul Simon impression in the privacy of a room where only my friends can laugh at me.

Chinese food on Christmas Day

Like many Portland transplants, my Christmas Day traditions are somewhat… non-Christmas-y. One that I started several years ago was to get Chinese takeout and Champagne and binge on cheesy action movies. Die Hard? Check! The Long Kiss Goodnight? Absolutely. Sometimes, I’ll even throw in something newer, like John Wick. If you are thinking, ‘Heck, yes!
