Donuts

January 22, 2020 by Jessica Berger and Tekela Fisher Leave a Comment

Once upon a time, Portland became famous for our donuts. We won’t name names, but the bright pink box can be seen on many flights out of PDX and in the hands of a multitude of excited tourists. We are here to give you the inside scoop: Those are NOT Portland’s best. They aren’t even close. They are more of a novelty item and we get why people want to bring them home to loved ones who have seen them on food tourism shows, but they aren’t the most delicious. So, if you are looking for just a damn fine donut or even an exotic new experience read below to see our picks for the top donuts in the city!

Chinese food on Christmas Day

December 19, 2019 by Jessica Berger and Tekela Fisher Leave a Comment

Like many Portland transplants, my Christmas Day traditions are somewhat… non-Christmas-y. One that I started several years ago was to get Chinese takeout and Champagne and binge on cheesy action movies. Die Hard? Check! The Long Kiss Goodnight? Absolutely. Sometimes, I’ll even throw in something newer, like John Wick. If you are thinking, ‘Heck, yes! Sign me up,’ then here is a list of where to grab Chinese Food in any of Portland’s wonderful neighborhoods on Christmas Day.

  • Duck House – 1958 SW 5th Ave – Chinese restaurant offering a Sichuan-focused menu in down-to-earth surrounds with a small bar. https://www.duckhousepdx.com/
  • Kung POW! – 500 NW 21st Ave – Chill, modern spot with a full bar & colorful mural serving Chinese classics, including vegan fare. http://www.kungpowpdx.com/#!/
  • XLB – 4090 N Williams Ave – Cool, casual counter serve for Chinese soup dumplings & comfort dishes, plus beer & wine. https://www.xlbpdx.com/
  • Frank’s Noodle House – 822 NE Broadway St – Homey, family-run joint with Chinese hand-pulled noodle mains & Korean BBQ plates, plus beer & wine. https://www.franksnoodlehousepdx.com/
  • Master Kong – 8435 SE Division St – Chinese comfort food from the the Tianjin and Guangdong regions of China. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Master-Kong/484919365345507
  • Bonus: Wong’s King – 8733 SE Division St – Dim sum & many Chinese standards offered in a bustling, no-frills banquet-style dining hall. http://www.wongsking.com/

But, with so many incredible and unique coffee shops in the city, who even has time for a chain like that? Not us! Here’s where you should grab your morning (or evening) caffeine buzz instead.

  • Carnelian Coffee 6923 SE Foster Rd This fantastic addition to the up-and-coming strip that is Foster Rd is owned by two rockhounds, so you can sip your exquisitely made oat milk latte while looking at awesome geodes through the provided magnifying glasses.

Made with butter (or coconut oil for the vegans) the caffeine molecules bond with the fats for an amazing extended boost. Pizza

There are few things in the world better than a good pizza. Portland has plenty of delicious places to get a good pie, so here are some of our favorites!

Portland, OR 97209

This restaurant by 4 time James beard nominee Cathy Whims tastes as delicious as it looks. She uses local and fresh ingredients on her wood fired pizzas.

The Crown

410 SW Broadway
Portland, OR 97205

This New York style pizzeria by Vitaly Paley does sourdough crust better than anyone else in town. They have both classic pizza flavors and some fun northwestern twists.

Sizzle Pie

multiple locations in Portland

This is easily the best greasy pizza you can get in town, plus they are open very late! They always feature a vegan pizza, a specialty pizza, and the classics.

These wood fired pizzas have won the hearts of many Portlanders, and for good reason. The dough is made fresh every morning and perfectly charred in the wood fired ovens. The pies are simple and classic, but delicious.
